Migraines are Terrible!

Anyone who has suffered with migraines know how relentless the pain and symptoms seem; to the point of debilitating you. Some have found relief from pharmaceutical medicines. However, the medicines either knock you out and you are sleeping life away. Or they make it hard to function. I personally have been plagued with ocular migraines that started when I was 12. I suffered into my early 20’s before I knew they were ocular migraines. Generations of my family had a history of headaches. So, I thought that was what I had and I just had to deal with them.

My ocular migraines would start with what I call quivering lightning bolts that ran across my visual picture. As it progressed, it would totally gray out that part of the picture and I would temporarily lose that sight area in both eyes. One day in high school, it got so bad, I had trouble walking to the school nurse. At that time, the only thing that worked was to lay down quietly, no light, no sound, for about 30 minutes. Most times that worked. As time went on, I found out that the trigger was a result of lack of sleep. If I didn’t get enough sleep, the ocular migraines came. But, laying down quietly isn’t always easy to do and it didn’t always work. Prevention was the key. I then discovered an herbal combination that works to prevent migraines and helps alleviate allergy issues; fenugreek and thyme.

Fenugreek seeds, crushed into a powder, have been used historically to aid digestion in the intestinal tract. As such, it can also heal ulcers and sores in the stomach and intestines. Externally, it can be used as a poultice for wounds and for inflammation. For the sinuses, it expels mucous. And, it prevents migraine headaches. Other uses: allergies, colds, coughs, and bronchitis, emphysema, lungs, and pneumonia, fever and bruises.

Thyme, the herb, also helps to expel mucous from the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. It historically has helped treat bronchitis, coughs, flu, fevers, migraine headaches, sore throats, lungs, eczema, nervous disorders, and nightmares. Also used to prevent kidney stones.

Chamomile and Wood Betony will also help in the prevention of migraine headaches. And it is important to include ample amounts of calcium and potassium, and vitamins B12, F, and PABA. In the area of physical body work, Chiropractic is also a fabulous treatment and tool used in the prevention of migraine headaches.

With my migraines, I have learned much and found several techniques that work.

  1. Not all migraines are the same. Find the source/trigger of the migraine. It could be a food, allergen, or it could be the muscular reaction to stress.
  2. The base of the skull is where many nerves are located. And, we naturally collect stress and tension along the lower edge of the skull, at the back of the head. This is a physical point that can be massaged to release the migraine. Releasing the neck tension will also open up your sinuses and help them to drain.
  3. Using reflexology on the center of the thumbs and your big toes will directly affect your head and can give some relief almost immediately.
  4. Make long term changes to your food choices, lifestyle, posture-sitting/laying/standing, and address the type of shoes that you wear. Every one of these can have a positive or negative impact on you.

Does that sound like a lot of work? Compare the work to the intensity of the pain… And, yes, it is possible to be pain/migraine free without pharmaceuticals. Ultimately, it is most important to find your trigger and then make life changes for prevention.
